In a significant crackdown on drug smuggling, Bengaluru’s Govindapura police intercepted a consignment of 318 kilograms of ganja (cannabis) worth ₹3.2 crore on Friday. Acting on a tip-off, authorities arrested three individuals caught red-handed while transporting the contraband in a car. The suspects are currently in custody, and the vehicle used for the smuggling has been seized.
Preliminary investigations revealed the involvement of a Kerala-based individual with a history of drug peddling. The accused reportedly has several cases registered against him in his home state. Officials suspect the cannabis was smuggled to meet the growing demand during New Year celebrations, a period when drug consumption tends to rise in the city.
This is not the first major drug seizure in Bengaluru this year. In October, a joint operation by the Central Crime Branch (CCB) and Narcotics Control Unit uncovered a massive drug racket worth ₹21.17 crore at the city’s Foreign Post Office. Over 600 parcels containing illicit substances were intercepted, with sources suggesting they were smuggled from countries like the US, UK, Belgium, and Thailand.
As the New Year approaches, Bengaluru police have intensified security checks and surveillance to prevent such incidents. The authorities are now working to dismantle the larger network involved in these drug smuggling activities, with more arrests expected in the coming days.
